Poiesis is an early music ensemble based in Montreal, Quebec. Its founding musicians are Mark Edwards, a Canadian harpsichordist who teaches at the Oberlin Conservatory, and Joanna Marsden, a traverso player who regularly performs with baroque music ensembles in the Netherlands and throughout North America.
The word poiesis is a transliteration from Greek. It means to make something, especially in relation to art. It describes perfectly the act of musical performance, a never ending (re)creation of music.
Poiesis is dedicated to the presentation of early music concerts that explore the potential of improvisation in its many forms to inform engaging and exciting performances.
